How Colorado calculates it
Ownership tax is most of the bill. Colorado's specific ownership tax works like property tax on your vehicle. It's based on 85% of the original MSRP — not what you paid — times a rate that falls with age: 2.1% in the first year, 1.5%, 1.2%, 0.9%, then 0.45% for years five to nine and a flat $3 after that.
Then the fixed fees: a weight-based registration fee ($6 plus 20¢ per 100 lbs over 2,000 for most cars), road and bridge safety surcharges ($19.30 and $18 for a 2,001–5,000 lb vehicle), a $4 clerk hire fee and, from July 2026, an age-of-vehicle fee of $7–$12.
Electric vehicles pay a $63.05 plug-in fee plus a road usage fee of $26 in 2026–27 (plug-in hybrids $13) that climbs each July to $96 by 2031.
Sales tax is 2.9% state plus county, city and district taxes where you live. Dealers subtract trade-ins. Register within 60 days of buying (90 days after moving here) to avoid late fees.
