How Michigan calculates it

Registration follows the sticker price, not what you paid. Michigan's registration tax is set by law from the vehicle's original list price (MSRP): $36 up to $6,000, rising $6 per $1,000 to $178 at $30,000, and $6 per $1,000 after that. The state adds $8 in administration fees.

It drops for three years. Each of the next three registrations is 90% of the one before, then it stays flat. Used cars start at the level for their age: calendar year minus model year.

Tax: 6% sales tax on dealer purchases, with trade-in credit up to $12,000 in 2026 (the cap rises until 2029). Private purchases pay 6% use tax at the Secretary of State, except transfers between close relatives.

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles pay $267 and $113 a year on top of registration, adjusted with the state gas tax.
