How Florida calculates it

The $225 surprise. The first time a vehicle gets a Florida registration and you don't have a Florida plate to transfer, you pay a one-time $225 initial registration fee plus $28 for the plate. New residents almost always pay it.

Sales tax is 6% of the price, minus a dealer trade-in, plus your county's discretionary surtax — but the surtax only applies to the first $5,000. Private sales are taxed the same way at the tax collector's office.

Moving to Florida? No Florida sales tax is due on a vehicle you bought and used for six months or more in another state. If it's been less, you owe the difference, with credit for tax you already paid.

Renewal is by weight: about $28 a year for small cars, $36 for mid-size and $46 for cars over 3,500 lbs (county amounts vary by a few cents). Florida has no inspection requirement and no EV registration fee.
