How Georgia calculates it

One tax, paid once. Since 2013 Georgia has charged a title ad valorem tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax and yearly property tax on vehicles. It's 7% of the vehicle's fair market value, paid each time a vehicle changes owners.

What "fair market value" means: for a new car, the higher of the selling price or the state's assessment value, minus your trade-in and dealer rebates. For a used car, it's the value in the state's assessment manual — the average of wholesale and retail — regardless of what you paid. Trade-ins only count at dealers.

New residents pay a reduced 3% TAVT. Transfers between immediate family members pay 0.5% if Georgia TAVT was already paid on the vehicle.

After that, just the tag. Renewal is $20 a year for a car or light pickup. Electric vehicles add $238.59 a year (July 2026 rate, adjusted annually); plug-in hybrids pay it only if they choose an alternative fuel plate. Regular hybrids don't.
